Assassin’s creed Valhalla: Wrath of the Druids

INTRODUCTION

On this DLC, I was the owner of the Connacht region. My role, among many things, was to :

– Make researches & look for references (thematic, architecture, biomes…)
– Create 2D layout, make documentation
– Blockout locations (layout, puzzles, propsing, ingredients, collectibles, IA placement and patrols)
– Test & debug
– Communicate between the different owners (mostly Narrative & Art owners and Directors)

Connacht’s region laid the most into the Druids theme of the DLC. It was a blast to add some kind of mystic and dark vibes into some of the camps !

RATHCROGHAN

For the main village of Connacht’s region, we worked hard with the level artist on the “festive” mood of this location. We wanted to create something that felt like credible village, during a pagan festival.

My main focus was to create fun parkour situations, while giving interesting stealth and combat opportunities (especially in the upper part of the camp).
My other big concern was to keep the whole village credible, based on the knowledge we had about the time period

CASHELORE

It was one of the most interesting and complex camp I worked on for the DLC. This location was part of the main quest and contains few cinematics in it. Plus, there is a small army battle inside ! It was a team effort between art, design, quest and cinematics to bring this one to life.

My main focus as owner on this location was to keep updated all the teams concerned by this camp, while achieving my own design objectives and making sure that we were all on the same page.
My intention there was to create a memorable eagle nest military camp, with vertiginous parkour opportunities.

Kesh Corann

I found out about Kesh Corann during the pre-production, while I was doing some researches on existing locations of Ireland that could be showcased in our game. It was the perfect place for the shady druids !

My intention was to create an interesting combat camp with this “existing in real life” place. I wanted to add some mystery in it, since you can’t access the core of this location without solving a puzzle.
Having the player fight the druids in those cave was the perfect opportunity to make them experience the new hallucinating fog feature !

TUAM

I wasn’t the main world builder working on this location: S/O to Clement Lavarenne for the 3D layout !
This camp is one of my favorite, as it showcase perfectly the shady and mystic mood of the Connacht territory. The whole camp design came from this idea: what if the druids hide themself in a secret lair under the village ?

When I worked on the concept of this camp and then on the 2D layout, my main intention was to capture the mystic essence of the druids: create a village that looks normal at first glance and, the more you explore it, the more you notice the cursed atmosphere until you find your way to the secret lair.

Fun fact: at the beginning of production, we wanted to add screaming sounds coming from a well, so that we could hint the player that something weird was happening here.
